CRIT 350 Examining Cultural Heritage

Students in this course will examine the systematic and deliberate destruction of cultural heritage around the world, a phenomenon known as “cultural cleansing” or “cultural genocide”. Case studies may include the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, the obliteration of the site of Nimrud in Iraq, or the damaged shrines in Mali, actions that are specifically designed to eradicate the cultural identity of an individual and/or community. Students will have the chance to hear first-person accounts from experts who worked in affected areas. Further, students will discuss ways to preserve and protect threatened cultural heritage from future conflicts.
