Liberal Arts Curriculum

All undergraduate degree programs at the University of the Arts require a substantial commitment (42 credits) to work in the liberal arts and sciences. This work ensures that students develop critical thinking, communication and literacy skills, as well as a broad cultural literacy. The Liberal Arts curriculum reflects the University’s conviction that a broad general education is essential for the education of artists, designers, performers, and writers, as it is for all citizens in a complex and ever-changing world.

Liberal Arts Requirements
Total Credits: 42 Liberal Arts Core Credits: 18
Writing Program Credits: 6 to 12 credits depending on course sequence required
All undergraduate students at the University are required to fulfill a sequence of writing courses. Most students complete these requirements during their first year of study; however, some students complete the requirements during their first three or four semesters at the University. The Writing Program and its faculty work closely with students to tailor a course sequence based on individual needs as indicated by standardized test scores, the University’s English Placement Exam, and performance in the writing courses. Satisfactory completion of the writing course sequence is required before registration for most other liberal arts courses.

The most common writing course sequence is completed during the first two terms of enrollment.
Other common methods of completing the writing courses take place over three terms and include increased instructor contact. These extended writing sequences take place over three terms and include increased instructor contact. These extended writing sequences offer one-to-one time between the student and the instructor, enabling individualized reading and writing progress. The common sequences include, but are not limited to:

Period Interpretation Credits: 6
Period Interpretations are interdisciplinary courses that explore the process by which we understand cultural eras. Students consider both conventional and innovative interpretations of cultural history. All students are required to take two Period Interpretation courses, one 20th century, and one pre-20th century. Ideally, these courses are completed in the Junior and Senior years. The Discipline History courses are specific to each major and teach students about their chosen field of interest. Each major requires three Discipline Histories (9 credits). The requirements are different for each major, so please review the program grids to confirm which courses pertain to your major. If you wish to learn about another field and take a discipline history course outside of your major, the course will count as Liberal Arts elective credit. Electives Credits: 15
Students may choose electives from the extensive listing of courses. Some students concentrate their study in a single area such as literature or psychology, while others take an array of courses from across the range of liberal arts offerings. The liberal arts curriculum offers students a great deal of flexibility and freedom of choice. To make the best use of these opportunities, students should study the elective lists carefully, explore their educational opportunities with their advisors and with the Liberal Arts faculty and Dean, and create a coherent study plan.
