The Center for Continuing Studies at The University of the Arts houses both the Continuing Education (CE) and the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE) programs.
Continuing Education (CE) offers classes and workshops for Continuing Education Credit and noncredit to the adult audience, as well as PA Act 48 activity hours. Offerings are available in a wide range of disciplines including, but not limited to: fine arts, crafts, digital technologies, music and recording industry, creative writing, photography, animation, dance and physical conditioning, interior design, illustration, writing for film and television, and professional development. Continuing Education also offers specialized certificate programs, as well as customized training solutions for corporate and organizational clients. Classes are generally held in the evenings and on weekends.
The Professional Institute for Educators (PIE), founded in 1973, serves the needs of educators, providing non-matriculated graduate-level courses for professional development, including PA Act 48 requirements. PIE’s offerings cover such subject areas as: crafts, music, visual arts, writing, digital media, art history, multicultural studies, teaching strategies, classroom management, and computer technology. With off-site locations, including the James A. Michener Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Wayne Art Center, courses are designed to utilize museum resources and exhibitions as an enriching opportunity for learning. Each summer, PIE hosts Continuing Inspiration - an intensive week-long studio experience to provide creative renewal for teachers.
Brochures are available for all of the Center’s program offerings. Please refer to these for specific listings and registration procedures. Please note that the degree programs at the University have specific course and curriculum requirements. Courses taken in Continuing Studies are not automatically accepted by the University’s degree programs, and if accepted, may not exceed a total of six credits. Persons seeking admission to a degree program at UArts or elsewhere should contact the appropriate office to determine which credits, if any, may be accepted.
