LALL 965 - Literature and Film: From Text to Screen

Explores the conceptual and the technical leap between the written text and its transformation to a cinematic text on the screen. The students will examine what happens to plot, characterization, bound and free description when a narrative text is converted to an audio-visual presentation. In certain examples, the transformation of narrative structure will be traced form the novel to the screenplay to the finished film. Students will gain insights into the relationships between written and filmed dialogue, between written description and cinematic mise-en-scene, between the novel’s omniscient narrator and the film’s voice over.
