AHST 408 Neoclassicism & RomanticismDivision of Liberal Arts
3 credits 45.0 hours 400 level undergraduate course
Eighteenth and nineteenth-century artists were radically inventive in approach, subject matter, and technique. In the wake of the Enlightenment, they lived during an era of political revolution and artistic development. In this class, students will explore the formal, theoretical, and socio-political aspects of Neoclassical and Romantic painting, sculpture, and architecture in France, England, Spain, and Germany. Students will consider the role of patronage, art criticism, the French Academy, the Salon, and genre. Major artists include: Piranesi, Canova, Vigee Le Brun, David, Gericault, Ingres, Delacroix, Barye, Reynolds, Kauffmann, Constable, Turner, Goya, Friedrich, and Runge.
Prerequisites FYWT*101 or FYWT*112
Priority enrollment for students who minor in Art History This course is not repeatable for credit. This course can fulfill an art history elective, liberal arts elective, or free elective requirement.
