WFTV 10001 Screenwriting

1 credit 60 hours
CE level continuing studies course

All great films begin with a great script. Screenwriting for film and TV is the art and craft of writing pictures that tell a terrific story. Through screenings, class discussions, and exercises, you’ll learn how to conceive of a story for the screen, write a detailed outline, and create a draft of a short screenplay. Workshop ideas with your classmates and turn your movie premise into a screenplay reality. This online screenwriting program will give students an introduction to the art and craft of writing for film and television. Through a study of storytelling strategies combined with a workshop experience, students will learn the fundamentals of screenwriting to create a number of exercises which will culminate in a short film script. Students will participate in two courses, a morning class - Film/TV Story Analysis where they’ll explore storytelling strategies, story structure, the power of conflict, and character development. By screening successful films and TV shows, reading scripts, and other supplemental texts, students will learn what makes a great film or television story, that they can apply to their own work. The afternoon course is a writing workshop where students will learn and practice the fundamentals of screenwriting from formatting to writing visually. Students will receive valuable feedback from their peers and instructor as they write character biographies, story outlines, and other exercises leading up to a short, 5-10 page narrative script. No previous screenwriting experience required!
